Music is very important in my life. Certain moods call for specific music. When you are in a career that is up and down, music helps to calm nerves, take the mind away from negative feelings, and/or just creates a happy atmosphere. What is your mood like?

How are you feeling…

  • …down? Listen to happy beats!
  • …nostalgic? Music can remind us of certain times in life.
  • …in love? Did music and lyrics start because of love? There are so many songs about it.
  • …angry? While lyrics may not be angry, musicality certainly can be.

My mom will tell you that my favorite songs have catchy riffs, many key changes, crescendos, falsettos, and deeply meaningful words. Different comes to mind. Always intrigued by the songs on the ‘B’ side. From Josh Groban to Five Finger Death Punch, ELO to NKOTB (30 years strong), Evanescence to Vonda Shepard, my range of music is quite interesting. Some of my current, favorite songs are listed below in my special categories below. Current because sometimes, new songs (to me at least) take over! Enjoy!

Soft Delicate Voices Yet So Bold and Meaningful

To me, the words mixed with the music is intense. Evanescence captures it so well. A few of my favorite songs and some excerpts:

“Don’t try to fix me I’m not broken…hello…I’m the light living for you so you can’t hide…don’t cry”

“Suddenly I know I’m not sleeping…hello…I’m still here all that’s left of yesterday”

Hello, Evanescence

“If you have to leave…I wish that you would just leave…cause your presence still lingers here…and it won’t leave me alone. These wounds won’t seem to heal…this pain is just too real, there’s just too much that time cannot erase.”

My Immortal, Evanescence

“And I’ve completely lost myself and I don’t mind, I can’t say no to you.”

“And I’m still waiting for the rain to fall…pour real life down on me ‘cause I can’t hold on to anything this good…and now am I good enough…for you to love me too.”

Good Enough, Evanescence

Light and Airy Music – feel good songs

Put Your Records On, Corinne Bailey RaeHer voice is so sweet and innocent. This song just makes happiness.

Caribbean Blue, EnyaThe music, the mystical journey you are taken on is spectacular. Enya is mesmerizing.

Remakes

Vonda Shepard– Many of the Ally McBeal soundtracks have remade songs on them. “For One in My Life” is one that comes to mind immediately. Stevie Wonder sings a great catchy version. However, Vonda Shepard sings it more slow and sultry.

Are you an Ally McBeal fan? The box set is available so you can watch all of the episodes! You can find it here on Amazon! The inappropriate behaviors are sure to rile up human resource professionals. Or if anything, make them laugh hysterically!!

Memorable Music:

Drop, Ying Yang Twins There is an explicit version so be aware. This song has a great beat and is also on my running playlist. The reason this is a favorite song of mine is it reminds me of my niece’s dance performance when she was younger. It has a great beat for a hip hop performance!

Back then, she was taught by Tony Bellissimo before he became a contestant on ‘So You Think You Can Dance’. Last I knew, he performed as a dancer for various artists like Justin Timberlake, Rihanna, and Chris Brown.

Get Naked (I Got A Plan), Brittney Spears Love the music in the background. Funny thing is I learned about this song during an aerobics class. Our teacher was in her late 50’s at the time and quite honestly didn’t look like she would ever pick out this music, especially with lyrics! She had some awesome music that wasn’t mainstream and I Ioved that!

Long and Lasting Love, Glenn Medeiros– In high school, I was totally in love with this hockey player from a private school. Yeah, I called the radio station often to dedicate songs to him. This was one of them. I laugh now but I still love this song, the melody, and the meaning.

Poweful Lyrics:

Sham Pain, Five Finger Death Punch– Twisted meaning. Champagne? (Warning – this song is explicit.)

Soundtracks and Compilation:

The Next Best Thing– A movie starring Madonna and Rupert…. The movie may have not gone over well but the soundtrack is great with songs by Madonna and a young Christina Aguilera. That song never became mainstream, so I never got sick of it because of overplaying.

Xanadu– Olivia Newton-John and ELO lost hits…most of them. I love the music and I also liked the movie.

Love Music
Love Songs

Love Songs 2: My girlfriends and I would hang out in our rooms listening to this CD while working at a very popular amusement park. We all came from different states and this CD reminds me of great college memories-I miss them all! This was one of those one-of-a-kind CDs. I haven’t been able to find it anywhere online!

Just Because Music:

Ben, Michael Jackson-Seriously, I just find this song so innocent and forgotten. I don’t remember how I crossed paths with this song but I am glad I did.

The Wandering Kind (Prelude), Josh GrobanSometimes I don’t need words. The music is just as powerful, especially the way it came together.

My Favorite:

Anything by NKOTB- The original boy band in my opinion. This one is very personal to me. I have been on 4 cruises and countless concerts.

Block Party– The opening song of the 2008 comeback year! One would only know this song if you went to the comeback concert and perhaps the NKOTB cruises! If I remember correctly, it finally became available on Music sharing sites in late 2018.

Check out my NKOTB Cruise post series!
It starts with my first post – The Pre-Cruise!

Thankful-If this isn’t the best, most sincere song to the fans. The video is so representative of the close relationship between the band and the blockheads – yes I am one of them!

I hope you enjoy the memories, moods, and music! I have created a playlist with almost every song listed and the songs available on soundtracks. Click here to listen to my 1st Moodful Music Playlist on Spotify!

  1. Great list! I am a big fan of Evanescence, myself! My whole life is shaped by music and I love how you’ve broken this down into songs that speak to different states and seasons of our lives. Excellent!

  2. This is great! Music has always had the biggest impact on me. I am very diverse in my taste too. I listen to pretty much everything. I also find that I can always find at least one song from an artist that I like. I also have countless playlists that I put together for every mood and activity. Glad to know there are more out there who do the same.

  3. Wow! Music is as important to you as it is to me! Both my parents are into music and they’ve passed in on to all of their kids. When I meet someone who isn’t that into music, I feel bad for them. They are missing out on sooooo much! Great, fun post!

    1. Isn’t it crazy how many different types of music there are? I, too sometimes feel like I have a random assortment of musical favorites. So fun to hear some of yours!

      1. Random is awesome for me! Stayed tuned for my favorite Holiday tunes – While I do like some of the overly played stuff, I also like music that you never hear – feels more personal.

  4. Music is such an important part of everyday. It’s a great expression of feelings – all types. It makes me feel like cleaning, dancing, doing other things. LOVE it!!

  5. Xanadu is one of my favorite soundtracks and movies of all time. In fact I listened to it while folding laundry yesterday.

  6. I love the variation in your taste in music. People think I’m strange when I tell them the kind of music I listen to! But it all has healing powers to help soothe the beast in me. I miss Evanescence. They were amazing 🙁

  7. I can’t sing but I definitely love music. I can’t live without it, even when I’m at work, I play it all day. I have an old soul so I love the 70’s and 80’s. And I’m a big fan of Evanescence – esp the My Immortal. I have it downloaded in my playlist. Thanks for sharing.

    1. For sure – that album is one of my favorites! I listen to 70s 80s and 90s as well. BeeGees and Steely Dan have songs I love! Thanks for sharing!

  8. I can definitely relate! My music taste is also very eclectic and depends on the mood and on what I am doing! Music for writing (soft pop), music for cleaning (dance tunes), music for the car…you get the idea!

  9. It’s fun going down memory lane once in a while and you can bet there is a song for everyone that takes them back. For me, now in my older years, Christisn music is the only music that lifts my spirits anymore. : )

    1. Christmas is my favorite holiday – I love certain songs…and there are so many artists that sing the same song – I definitely have my favorites! I am glad that Christmas music lifts your spirits!

  10. I know what you mean about different types of music evoking different feelings. I know some of these songs, but others I’m not sure if I’ve heard them…I would probably recognize them if I heard them!

    1. For sure you would probably recognize some of them. However, some of them never made it to the radio, which is why I never get sick of them!

  11. Great post! Everyone in the world has one song or album that instantly puts them in a happy mood. Music is a universal language, and you’ve captured that in this piece. Well done!

  12. Thanks for the great suggestions. Quite a few of them I have not heard in the past, so I am excited to give a listen. I can’t listen to Adele’s When We Were Young without planning on having a good cry. It reminds me of an almost boyfriend. We were both the ones that got away, and that song brings back every moment of that relationship. OH. Now I will have to listen and walk down memory lane and cry.

    1. Absolutely – I sometimes make my mom listen to a song that moves me…so she can be moved. She gets me so she listened and most of the time agrees with me (of course she does)!
